About the New York Circle of Translators

The New York Circle of Translators (NYCT), which began in 1979 as a small group of dinner companions, has become a New York State not-for-profit corporation with several hundred members. It is governed by a set of Bylaws which regulate the internal affairs of the association. Our members are independent translators and interpreters as well as companies and organizations. NYCT is a chapter of the American Translators Association (ATA) which is, in turn, an affiliate of the International Federation of Translators (FIT).

NYCT members work in a variety of languages and specialties in industry, law, finance, commerce, the arts and academia. Our translators and interpreters are committed to the exchange of ideas and mutual support. Another goal is to educate the general public about the professional nature of interpreting and translating.

Our monthly meetings feature experts in all aspects of the translation and interpretation professions. Past presentations have covered subjects as varied as court interpretation, technical translation, subtitling, machine translation and literary translation. NYCT also organizes continuing education workshops and seminars. Social events such as restaurant dinners and an annual holiday party offer opportunities to meet people and to network.

The NYCT promotes its members' professional services to the business community by means of a new Online Membership Directory as well as an annual printed Directory. It also has a telephone hotline and a listing in the Yellow Pages. Potential purchasers of translation or interpretation services are directed to the or are otherwise put in contact with members who fulfill their requirements.

NYCT members receive a monthly newsletter, The Gotham Translator, containing information about upcoming meetings, Circle activities, members' news and commentaries, and current articles about the world of translation.
