    New AI tech: What are you afraid of?

    Description

    It’s official: Not only has the neural machine translation (NMT) “train” left the station, but the AI caboose is careening toward the bend. Are you settled comfortably in first class, or running desperately to catch up? Join us for a frank conversation about the fears, rewards, and reactions associated with these paradigm-shifting technologies. We’ll explore the benefits of NMT and AI, the skills needed to postedit NMT and AI output, and the great pricing debate. We’ll also talk about “fit for purpose” and look at how freelancers might view NMT and AI as tools to be turned to our advantage. Finally, we’ll give you a glimpse into how we’ve integrated these tools into our respective workflows to boost our productivity and bottom lines. Get ready for plenty of reflection and straight talk as we explore a hot topic with profound implications for our profession. Save the Date! 

    Speakers

    Joachim Lépine

    Joachim Lépine is a French to English translator. His firm, Traductions LION, has served an array of high-profile clients. Together with Ann Marie Boulanger, he founded LION Translation Academy in 2022. Previously, he trained for the United Nations, the European Commission, L'Ordre des traducteurs, terminologues et interprètes agréés du Québec (OTTIAQ), Magistrad, Editors Canada, the Translation Bureau, Institute of Translation and Interpreting (U.K.), Training for Translators (U.S.), and many other organizations worldwide. He taught English translation and related courses at the university level for 15 years and was chair of the OTTIAQ Continuing Education Committee from 2013 to 2020.

    Ann Marie Boulanger

    Ann Marie Boulanger has a BA and an MA in translation studies. She is the owner of Traduction Proteus Inc., a boutique French to English translation firm specializing in medical and life sciences translation. She is also a part-time lecturer in translation studies at McGill University and a trainer, having co-founded LION Translation Academy with Joachim Lépine. In addition to her commercial translation work and training endeavors, she translates adult fiction and children’s books. She is an active mentor and coach to beginner translators. She is a member of the board of directors of L'Ordre des traducteurs, terminologues et interprètes agréés du Québec.
