JOIN THE NEW YORK CIRCLE OF TRANSLATORS!
We’re a growing, dynamic group of translators, interpreters, agencies that provide language services, instructors and others with an interest in the translation and interpreting fields. We serve the tri-state New York metropolitan area, and we’d be delighted to have you join our organization!
Here are some of the benefits of membership in the Circle:
Get referrals that lead to paid work: Your online membership directory profile shows your contact details, language pairs, areas of expertise, and certifications. Many of our members tell us that one or two project referrals from their online profiles pay for the cost of membership.
Network and make new friends: At Circle events, including our monthly meetings, networking events, holiday parties, and picnics, you’ll have the opportunity to meet other translators and interpreters, exchange business cards with representatives from language service provider companies, and discuss the rewards and challenges of careers in the language service industry.
Stay current in your field: As a member, you’ll be able to sign up for our professional workshops, offered two or three times a year, at a discount. Our workshops will keep you informed of the latest trends in language service fields, present best practices for providing excellent translation and interpretation, and provide insight about setting up and running your own language service provider company. Workshops and monthly meetings feature distinguished presenters and panelists who have a wealth of experience in the translation and interpretation fields.
Receive The Gotham Translator, our electronic newsletter published 5-6 times yearly: Stay up to speed on member news, read articles written by your fellow New York Circle of Translator members, and learn about regional and national training events and competitions for translators and interpreters. See selected articles at www.gothamtranslator.org.
Benefit from expert guidance through the Mentoring Program: Translators and interpreters who are new to the profession may submit an application to be paired with an experienced colleague who provides guidance on career development. Common topics include:
• Developing a specialization
• Marketing language services
• Building a freelance business
• Working with CAT tools
• Earning professional certification
The mentor-mentee relationship typically lasts for a period of six months. Participants are free to determine their own frequency and means of contact. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. The mentoring program is not intended to be a substitute for formal instruction in the techniques of translation or interpretation, and the mentor is not obligated to review or correct the work of the mentee.
Prepare for and take the ATA Certification exam: The New York Circle of Translators works with the American Translators Association to schedule sittings of the ATA Certification exam. As a member, you will receive notifications of exam sittings as well as access to information sessions about the exam and how to prepare for it.
Receive financial support for your professional development: The Charles M. Stern Autonomous Grant provides funding to translators and interpreters who are members of the NYCT and who wish to participate in professional development activities but would need financial assistance to do so. As a member, you will receive notifications about the Grant as it is offered for qualifying activities that help you grow.
Memberships to the New York Circle of Translators run for one calendar year beginning on the date of your registration or renewal and expiring on the same date of the following year. (see details in Membership Categories).
