Preparing for the ATA Certification Exam 

A panel discussion with exam graders and certified translators

This roundtable will be a live event where panelists will discuss ATA exam preparation strategies, exam grading guidelines, and updated information on the remote exam format. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and catch up with colleagues.

How to get there: Enter through the Visitor's Center at 904 Lexington Ave (68th St. and Lexington Ave), go to the 3rd floor, and take the elevator to the Faculty Dining Hall at the 8th floor

PANELISTS:

Ellen Sowchek has been an ATA-certified French>English translator since 1990, focusing on the translation of legal and human-rights related documents. As a sub-specialty, she has worked extensively in the entertainment industry as both translator and interpreter, translating legal documents, scripts, dialogue treatments, press kits, subtitles and credits for many films. A grader since 2015, she currently serves as the Chair of the French>English grader group.



Elizabeth (Liz) Herron-Sweet is a translator and interpreter based in New York City who specializes in legal, business, and academic translations. She has a B.A. in International Studies with a concentration in Portuguese from Middlebury College and worked for six years as a paralegal at a large international law firm in New York City and São Paulo. She has a certificate in English to Portuguese translation from New York University and a certificate in Basic Training in Conference Interpreting from Versão Brasileira in Curitiba, Brazil. She is currently serving as administrator of the ATA Law Division and vice president of the New York Circle of Translators. She has been ATA-certified in the Portuguese > English language pair since 2017 and became a grader in 2022.



Paula Ianelli has been a certified translator and conference interpreter for over 15 years. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Translation and a full diploma in Conference Interpreting. She is certified by both ATA and the Brazilian Translators and Interpreters Association, and she is a member of AIIC and the Brazilian Association of Conference Interpreters. She's also an experienced speaker. When Paula is not translating from English and Spanish into Brazilian Portuguese, she is interpreting in NYC, working on an RSI assignment or running her T&I Business.



Christopher Vicioso. Born in California and raised in a bilingual home in Madrid, Spain, Christopher has nearly 20 years of experience as an English to Spanish and Spanish to English translator. Aside from the banking industry — his current role is at Capital One — he also has experience in the software and healthcare sectors. Christopher has been ATA certified since 2022.
