CARES Act, PPP, and You:
A Guide for Translators and Interpreters
The Coronavirus, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act that was passed by Congress with overwhelming partisan support and signed into law by President Trump on March 27, 2020, has benefited most individuals and business entities in the United States. Freelance translators and interpreters have also received financial assistance under some of the programs launched under the CARES Act to address the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Following a general overview, this presentation focuses on specific government support programs that are of potential interest to translators and interpreters, in particular Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) and the Payroll Protection Program (PPP). It will address such issues as to eligibility, PPP funding calculations, PPP loan disbursement, and PPP loan forgiveness, and is based in part on discussions on the ATA’s Business Practices listserv and on Robin Bonthrone’s “PUA & PPP Guidance for Translators and Interpreters” publication.
Robin Bonthrone CT MITI has been a full-time professional German-to-English financial-legal translator for more than 30 years, specializing in financial accounting and reporting, tax law, financial legislation, financial regulation and supervision, and financial technology. He has more than 20 years’ experience as a translation trainer and presenter at translation conferences, seminars, and workshops in Europe and the United States, and also teaches in-house seminars and workshops at companies and public institutions. He is co-chair of the ISO Standards Committee of the International Federation of Translators (FIT) and is a member of the ATA Professional Development, Finance and Audit, and Business Practices Committees.
